The problem
Darbhanga floods almost every monsoon, and many of its traditional ponds have been filled in or choked with silt. Many plantation drives count saplings on the day of planting, but most of those saplings die within a year.
What we do
- 01
Plantations that survive
Native species such as neem, jamun, peepal and amla, planted by women's groups who are paid to water and protect each tree for three years.
- 02
Pond revival
Desilting and bank planting of village ponds with the gram panchayat, so they absorb flood water and hold it through the dry months.
- 03
Waste segregation
Door-to-door training and compost pits in partner villages, run with the gram panchayat.
- 04
Eco-clubs in schools
Students run school nurseries and water audits as part of our learning centres.
We planted 2,000 trees on the panchayat land. We are paid to look after them, so we check every one. Most of them are taller than me now.
