India is now ChatGPT’s biggest market: the news in 30 seconds
On 3 November 2026, OpenAI India’s managing director Prabhjeet Singh told The Economic Times that India is now ChatGPT’s largest market by weekly active users, ahead of the United States, and that the number of Indian users has doubled since January.
For comparison, in February 2026 OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said India had about 100 million weekly ChatGPT users and was the second-largest market. OpenAI has not shared the new total, but the direction is clear: a huge and fast-growing number of your customers now use AI to search, compare and decide.
Why a business owner should care: people are not only using ChatGPT for homework and emails. They also ask it where to buy, whom to hire and which clinic, coaching centre or shop to visit.
What this means for your business
On Google, a customer sees a page of results and can scroll. In an AI answer, they usually see two or three names, with a short reason for each. If you are not one of those names, you are often not seen at all.

| Normal Google search | AI answer (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot) | |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer sees | A list of 10 links and ads | A short answer naming 2–3 businesses |
| How they search | Short words: “dentist Madhapur” | Full questions: “good dentist near Madhapur open on Sunday?” |
| What wins | Keywords, links, good pages | Clear facts, real reviews and the same details everywhere |
| Second place | Still visible on page 1 | Often not mentioned at all |
The good news: you do not need a big budget. Small local businesses with clear information and happy customers can beat large companies in AI answers, because the AI is looking for the best match for one specific question.
How ChatGPT and other AI tools pick a business
AI tools do not guess. When someone asks about a business or service, they roughly do this:

- Understand the question. Service, area, budget and timing, such as “open on Sunday”.
- Search the web. Their search bots read websites they are allowed to read. ChatGPT search uses a bot called OAI-SearchBot; Google’s AI answers use Google Search; Microsoft Copilot uses Bing.
- Check trusted places. Your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directories and news. They trust facts that match across many places.
- Write a short answer with links. They name the businesses that match best and link to where they found the information.
8 steps to get your business found in ChatGPT and AI search

1. Let AI search bots read your website
Your robots.txt file tells bots what they can read. Make sure it does not block OAI-SearchBot (used for ChatGPT search), Googlebot or Bingbot. Many Indian websites block bots by mistake through a security plugin or an old setting.
2. Complete your Google Business Profile
Add the right category, exact address, phone, opening hours (including Sundays and holidays), services, prices and fresh photos. AI answers about local businesses often use this information.
3. Write clear facts on your website
In plain words, say what you do, which areas you serve, who you help and your starting prices. “We build websites for shops in Vizag from ₹5,000” is easy for AI to repeat. “We deliver innovative digital solutions” is not.
4. Answer the questions customers really ask
Write down the questions people ask you on calls and WhatsApp, and answer each one on your website in 2–3 lines. AI tools love pages that answer one question clearly.
5. Collect real reviews and reply to them
Ask every happy customer for a Google review and send them the direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad. Fresh, detailed reviews are a strong trust signal.
6. Get mentioned on other trusted websites
List your business on good directories (Justdial, IndiaMART or your industry’s directory), your LinkedIn page and partner websites. Keep the name, address and phone exactly the same everywhere.
7. Keep your website fast and easy to read
Important text should be in the page itself, not only inside images or pop-ups. Many bots read the plain page and may not run heavy JavaScript. The site should also load quickly on a phone.
8. Add structured data (schema)
Schema is a small piece of code that tells machines your business name, address, hours and services in a fixed format. Your developer can add it in under an hour.
Step 1 in practice: a simple robots.txt
Open yourwebsite.com/robots.txt in your browser. If you see Disallow: / under User-agent: * or under OAI-SearchBot, AI search bots cannot read your site. A safe version looks like this (ask your developer to update it):
# Let search and AI search bots read your website
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
User-agent: Bingbot
Allow: /
# Optional: GPTBot is used for AI training, not for ChatGPT search.
# Allow or block it as you prefer.
# User-agent: GPTBot
# Disallow: /

Mistakes that keep businesses out of AI answers
Fake or paid reviews
They break Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended. AI tools also notice when reviews look copied or unnatural.
Blocking all bots
Some security plugins block every unknown bot. That can quietly remove you from ChatGPT search answers.
Hundreds of AI-written pages
Thin, copy-paste pages for every area do not build trust. A few genuinely useful pages work better.
Different details in different places
An old phone number on one site and a new one on another makes AI unsure which is correct.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT and AI search
Is India really ChatGPT’s biggest market now?
Yes, by weekly active users. OpenAI India’s managing director Prabhjeet Singh told The Economic Times on 3 November 2026 that India is now ChatGPT’s largest market by weekly users and that Indian users have doubled since January. OpenAI has not shared the new total number.
How can I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make sure ChatGPT’s search bot (OAI-SearchBot) can read your website, write clear facts about your services, area and prices, complete your Google Business Profile, collect real reviews and get listed on trusted directories. There is no paid way to be placed in ChatGPT’s normal answers.
Is AI search optimization different from normal SEO?
Mostly it is good SEO done properly. AI search (sometimes called GEO, generative engine optimization) puts extra weight on clear facts, direct answers to questions, reviews and consistent details across the web, because the AI writes one short answer instead of showing ten links.
Should I block GPTBot?
It is your choice. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search; that is controlled by OAI-SearchBot. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers, do not block OAI-SearchBot.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not right now. llms.txt is a proposed file that summarises your website for AI tools, but the big AI search tools have not said they rely on it. It does no harm to add one, but the 8 steps in this guide matter much more.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to affect ChatGPT search. Building trust through reviews, mentions and useful pages takes longer, usually a few weeks to a few months, just like normal SEO.
Does this also help with Google AI Overviews?
Yes. Google says its AI features use the same Search systems, so the usual SEO best practices apply: let Googlebot crawl your pages, keep important content in text, and create helpful, reliable pages for people.
